What the series shows
- Spring beats fall every year. Each Jan–Jun rate is higher than the Jul–Dec rate before it: 64% then 76%, 70% then 74%, 71% then 73%, 68% then 71%. The spring cohorts are also two to four times larger. NCEES gives no reason.
- Spring rates are drifting down. 76%, 74%, 73%, 71% across four springs, while the spring cohort kept growing to 1,063 takers.
- Small cohorts swing. The smallest half-year, 70% of 238 (Jul–Dec 2023), rests on a few hundred takers; one half-year is weak evidence, so read the range, not a single number.
Repeat takers
The FE exam page reports first-time takers only. NCEES Squared, its annual report, adds repeat takers for the fiscal year Oct 2024–Sep 2025:
- Everyone on a first attempt: 67%.
- Everyone on a repeat attempt: 37%; the takers behind each rate are listed in the table.
- EAC/ABET graduates only: 70% first time, 40% on a repeat.
- The year before (Oct 2023–Sep 2024): 67% first time, 36% on a repeat.
A fail costs more than the fee: the second try is a different, harder statistical bet. What that does to the expected bill: FE Environmental cost.

Is it easier than FE Civil?
On every published measure the rate is higher: 71% against 66% for first-time EAC/ABET takers in Jan–Jun 2026, and 37% against 32% for repeat takers in the 2025 fiscal year. Of the FE disciplines only FE Mechanical posted a higher first-time rate in that half-year (73%).
That is not proof the questions are easier. The two exams test different specifications, and the populations differ: the civil cohort is about six times larger. Choose by the work you want to do, then prepare for that test. The civil numbers: FE Civil pass rate; all seven disciplines side by side: FE exam pass rates.
Two periods, two populations
The half-year rate (71%) counts recent EAC/ABET graduates only; the fiscal-year rates count everyone. Compare first-time with repeat inside one fiscal year, as above, not across the two sources.
What the number cannot tell you
- A target score. Not published (a scaled score against a minimum ability level). No pass rate converts into a number of questions.
- Your odds. The rate averages everyone in the population. If you fail, the diagnostic report (only on a fail) shows where your own points went.
