FE and PE Exam

How this site is put together

FE and PE Exam is run independently: no one at NCEES, ABET, Pearson VUE or a state board writes, reviews or endorses it. It covers five FE disciplines and the PE Mechanical HVAC & Refrigeration exam. App buttons lead to our own practice apps; that is the site's income, and it runs no ads.

Where the facts come from

Exam facts are read from primary documents only, and every table row carries a source number and a check date:

  • Exam pages on ncees.org for the FE and each PE exam: format, fees, results and the latest half-year pass rates.
  • The exam specifications (the PDF outline of each exam): knowledge areas, question ranges and units. FE outlines in force date from July 2020; the PE HVAC&R outline from October 2025.
  • The examinee guide (the May 2026 edition): appointment times, breaks, ID, retakes, rescheduling and refunds.
  • The calculator policy page for the 2026 list of permitted models.
  • Squared, the annual report, for fiscal-year first-time and repeat pass rates.
  • The Model Law and Model Rules (2026) and the Texas and California board pages for the licensure path.
  • Archived copies of those pages in the Internet Archive for pass rates of earlier half-years, cited as archives.

One stored value per fact feeds every page, so when NCEES changes a fee the correction is made once and every table shows the new check date.

Where sources disagree

  • Appointment length. The FE page says six hours; the guide's own table adds up to 5 h 55 min. We print the page's wording with the breakdown beside it.
  • Results. The FE page says business days, the PE Mechanical page says days. Each exam keeps its own page's wording.
  • Handbook versions. The examinee guide calls the free MyNCEES copy simply "the current version", and errata exist for some editions. Prep sites quote version numbers the guide doesn't confirm, so this site prints none.
  • Repeat pass rates. The exam pages and the annual report cover different periods. We never put a half-year rate and a fiscal-year rate in one comparison.

How the problems are written

  • Every problem is written for this site against one knowledge area of the current specification. None comes from a real exam or from someone's memory of one.
  • Each problem lists its givens and the unknown, and the solution is worked step by step in the units the exam uses: SI and USCS on the FE, USCS only on PE HVAC&R.
  • Formulas follow the FE Reference Handbook by section name; we don't reproduce its tables or pages.
  • A separate review pass works each problem blind, compares its answer with ours and reads every explanation. Problems that fail are rewritten or dropped.
  • Shared mathematics, statistics and ethics are explained once, on FE practice problems, and engineering economics on its own page. Where two disciplines test the same subject, such as thermodynamics in FE Mechanical and FE Chemical, each page takes its own exam's angle and links to the other.

What the site doesn't cover

FE Other Disciplines, FE Industrial and Systems, and the PE exams other than HVAC&R appear only as fact rows in tables, with no practice pages yet. There is no state-by-state licensing guide: the PE license page uses Texas and California as examples, and your own board's rules always decide. Mistakes and who to ask about your registration: contact.
